BLACKJACK STRATEGIES FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS
Before you learn the techniques for card counting, you must be well aware of the basic Blackjack strategies needed for winning.
The basic idea on which card counting in Blackjack is based is that the deck is full of Aces and tens, which of course is at your advantage, and in case it is full of lower cards it is at the dealer’s advantage. Logically, this means that when you have an advantage you should bet to the maximum, and if it is the dealer’s favor, bet minimum.
So in other words, if you are aware if the deck is full of tens and smaller cards you will have the advantage of foreseeing which strategy to use, and what bet to make.
If you know that the deck is filled with tens, then hitting the dealer’s soft 17 with a hand of a 10 and a 6 is not such a good idea. In case the deck has a lot of aces, then the chance of hitting Blackjack is greater. When you hit a Blackjack, the pay-off is 3:2, and then the dealer will win only in case he also hits a Blackjack. This is the advantage for the player when the deck is filled with aces.
Counting in Blackjack doesn’t mean that you need to count and memorize every single card of the 6 decks, but rather is done by assigning easy to remember points to the different card numbers and colors. Assigning these point values for each card is called “running count”, and based on the “plus-minus” strategy, is like this:
For card numbers 2, 3,4,5,6 you assign +1;
For card numbers 7, 8, 9 you assign 0;
And for cards: 10, J, Q, K, Ace you assign a -1.
For example, the dealer begins dealing the following cards: Ace (-1) then 7 (+1) then 3 (+1) and 4 (+1). The total count up until now is 2.
When you have counted the “run count” you must try to figure out what the “true count” is. This can be done when you divide the running count into the number of remaining decks. The resulting “true count” will help you decide on the appropriate bet size, and hopefully help you win the game.
